D. Bruce Greenwald has over 30 years of experience in the evaluation, design and administration of housing, historic preservation, commercial, retail, corporate and broadcasting projects. He is currently the principal and director of design for D. Bruce Greenwald, Architects. He has been a key member in a wide variety of projects over the years, ranging in scale from $100,000 to $20 million. Services are performed to the highest technical standards and all projects are prepared in CAD to suit project requirements.

Multi-family housing projects include a 57-unit student housing complex in Boston and a 150-unit, high-rise housing project with a central common meeting facility, swimming pool and exercise room in Chelsea, MA. Single-family residential projects include an extensive list of renovations, additions and new construction in locations in New England, Mid-Atlantic, and Seattle, WA areas. Historic preservation work includes many local projects.  Preservation and reconstruction of the c. 1770’s Colonel Jonathan Glover house in Marblehead, MA involved the restoration of a hand-hewn, post-and-beam frame with mortise and tenon joinery to a house that was severely damaged in a fire.

Greenwald received an honor award from the Associated General Contractors of Massachusetts for his design and administration of renovations and additions to WBZ TV/Radio in Boston, Massachusetts. Additions and extensive renovations were made to the existing facility while under operations 24/7.  Recent work in this sector includes designs for new facilities for WODS, WBCN and WZLX Radio stations in Boston, MA.

Greenwald also has extensive experience in renovations and planning for corporate clients such as Mellon Bank, Blackstone Property Management, CBS/Viacom, The Union of Concerned Scientists, Compass Management and Leasing, 2 Brattle Center Inc. and Foxborough Management Corporation. Work in this sector has involved projects of varying scales and includes the design of tenant spaces in high-rise office towers and suburban office complexes.

Other commercial projects by Greenwald include the Main Post Office in Acton, MA and the design of several R & D buildings for Acton Technology Park. Industrial facilities include Liquid Metronics in Acton, MA—a pump manufacturer, Logan Office and Distribution Complex in Chelsea, MA—an airfreight forwarding terminal, and Marshall Industries—an electronics manufacturer and distributor.  Technical projects include several telephone and Internet switching facilities for New England Voice and Data.

Retail projects include the design of a major shopping center in Portsmouth, RI that encompassed new construction of 85,000 sf, as well as renovations to an historic post-and-beam structure dating to the 1790’s that was the visual and thematic centerpiece to the project. A recent client in this sector is Bottega Veneta, an Italian fashion house.

Greenwald was a teacher and design critic at the Boston Architectural Center for 10 years, including work in the A-1 design studio as a thesis advisor and as a member of the Thesis Committee. Community work has included 10 years of service on the Historic District Commission in Marblehead, the last three years as chairman. Recent efforts in the preservation community helped to save a 230-year-old commercial wharf building, one of the last of its kind in New England, winning a “Pioneers in Partnership” award from the Essex National Heritage Commission.

Other endeavors include work in drawing and sculpture. In 1981, Greenwald received the Julia Amory Appleton award from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. This award provided a grant for a traveling fellowship, which involved a study of vernacular architecture in the Mediterranean basin. An extensive series of sketches and diaries from these travels were later displayed at the Harvard Graduate School of Design gallery. Sculpture work includes completed pieces in wood, plaster, bronze and metal constructions. Several works were exhibited in the Marblehead Festival of Arts. A one-man show of Mr. Greenwald’s work was exhibited at the Ironic Gallery in Marblehead Ma.

Greenwald conceived, designed and coordinated a site installation sculpture at Beach Bluff Park on the Swampscott/Marblehead boundary along the Atlantic coast. This “Sun Circle” sculpture is an astronomical time piece that indicates the times of the rising and setting sun on the equinox and solistice dates throughout the year.

Greenwald was previously a principal with the firm of Gauchat Architects, Inc. Other prior experience included work with Jung/Brannen and The Architects Collaborative—where he was building architect for the Central Administration Building for the University of Baghdad, Iraq. He also works in frequent collaboration with Platt Anderson Freeman Architects.

Married for 40 years to K. H. Krena, a writer, photographer and jewelry artist,  www.khkrena.com  they often collaborate on design projects as well as life projects.
